Focke Wulf Ta 183 from
Revell - scale 1/72. Build straight OOB.
Painted with Humbrol enamels. This model was designed by Kurt Tank
(The Ta stands for his name). It was proposed as a contender for the
German Air Ministry's requirement for an emergency fighter. It was
to be powered by the HeS 011A turbojet which had been under development
since 1943. The fighter had to be able to operate at high altitude
in order to reach the Allies' high-flying B29 bombers and Mosquitos.
The Ta 183/I (Project I) comprised of a stubby fuselage, 40 degree
swept wings and a 60 degree swept fin with a highly positioned tail.
The flight surfaces were made mainly of wood. The armament was arranged
around the nose air intake. This variant was the eventual choice to fulfil the emergency fighter
requirement and was accepted in February 1945, and 16 prototypes
were ordered a month later. When the Allies finally captured the
factories in April 1945, none had actually been built. |
